Trephina Gorge

We had been recommended by a few fellow travelers to go and check out East MacDonnell Ranges and everyone had said Trephina Gorge was a nice place to camp. We stopped off at Emily and Jessie Gaps but didn't find it very impressive. Maybe we have just seen too many gorges.

On arrival at Trephina Gorge campground we surveyed the possible campsite options suitable for our big rig, which were only really two. In the end we decided to take the easier to park option, which was closer to another family and soon made some new friends, the Chapmans. The Chapmans are like us, doing six months on the road, heading in the same direction as us and have two fantastic kids that our kids quickly idolized. Now don't get worried we haven't lost a child along the way but you get the idea, they have kids.

The next couple of days we spent doing some homeschooling, washing, splashing in Trephina Creek, sitting around a campfire and enjoying some good company of the Chapmans and Robin and Anne from Tassie.

Trephina Creek had water flowing, which is quite unusual for this time of year. Although it was only ankle deep it was enough for the kids to get completely soaked from head to toe on both of their walks in it. We didn't make it far from our campsite during this time and never did manage enough energy to concur the lookout but we did enjoy the relaxation and slower pace for the moment.

Trephina Gorge campground was a lovely little bush campground, which was rather popular with people who settle in for a week or so. There were no designated campsites, which made it difficult for some people to find a spot as long termers tended to set themselves up with plenty of space so they couldn't be encroached upon. National Parks does have plans on upgrading the campground to more designated campsites with some suitable for caravans and others for camper trailers and tents.

After our relaxed bush camping in a lovely setting we started the journey north to Darwin to meet up with Geoff and Sue (Thea’s dad and step mum) in early August.

Till next time...
Tig and Thea
